Letter to Buddy Holly

Miss Alex Silba wrote this letter to Buddy in May of 1956.

This was her first letter to Buddy, but she states that she had been writing to Sonny [Curtis] for a while.

Miss Silba was an 18 year old super fan from Baird, Texas, and wrote to Buddy to ask for a picture and for some continued correspondence. She also informed Buddy that she and her friends thought that he sounded like Elvis when he sang “Love Me.”

Given that Buddy and Elvis played a few shows together and generally got along quite well, it was a nice compliment on many levels!

The letter reads:

"Box 822

Baird, Texas

Dear Buddy,

I’ve heard your record a lot and I sure do like it, it’s a very good record and the music, it’s terrific. Sonny can sure play lead guitar.

I first heard of you from Sonny, he writes to me pretty often, he told me about you before your record was out. Sonny is a very fine boy, even if I haven’t met him I still think he’s a fine boy, and so are you. You have a great voice, when my friends first heard “Love Me” they said “Oh, this Presley has a new record out.” I said “What’s the name of it?” and they said “’Love Me’ and you should hear it,” and I said, well I’ve heard it but it’s not Presley, that’s Buddy Holly and they wouldn’t believe it until they heard it on the radio, and you know I also think you sound like Presley.

Say Buddy, would you send me one of your pictures. I’d sure love to have one, I collect pictures of Movie Stars, Singers, D.J.’s and friends.

I’ll tell you a little about myself. I’m 5’2”, I have reddish brown hair, brown eyes. I weigh 105 and I’m 18 years old. I love Hillbilly and Be-Bop music and a little Pop.

Well I think I’ll close for now.

Yours Always

“Honey Love”
